Aeronautics goes carbon-free
As in many other markets, rethinking the aeronautical sector is essential to accelerate the energy transition and make transport more sustainable.
A European partnership between the public and private sectors has set up the “Clean Sky” program. The aim: to develop a range of innovative technologies for a clean, environmentally-friendly aviation system by 2024.
Alternative and responsible solutions such as biofuels or hydrogen-powered aircraft, which use cryogenics to operate, are being developed. Superconductivity can also considerably reduce aircraft weight and increase efficiency and performance.
The changing aeronautics sector is turning to cryogenics to design new, more electrified aircraft (hybrids) by replacing hydraulic functions, or 100% electric aircraft via electric propulsion (hydrogen and fuel cells).
