After several years of work to device the ERIS test bench designed by ONERA, ABSOLUT SYSTEM took part in the installation of the vacuum test chamber, the auxiliary housing and the cryogenic coolers at ONERA facilities.

The cryogenic pump (or cryopump) of the vacuum chamber reproduces the orbiting satellite environement. Therefore, it enables performance and life testing of the engines developed by ONERA, as similar as possible to the real conditions of use. The cryogenic catchers allow the vacuum to be maintained despite the expulsion of particles, generated by the plasma propulsion of the engine. Indeed, the cold trap captures and freezes the Xenon molecules as they are released, guaranteeing optimal conditions throughout the weeks of testing. To achieve this, anticipation, rigorous design and a focusing on details are the keys to success.

This large-scale project demonstrated the complementarity of know-how by bringing together the skills and technologies of several players:

This large-scale project demonstrated the complementarity of know-how by bringing together the skills and technologies of several players: the vacuum chamber, manufactured by RAVANAT Chaudronnerie, is combined with a PTC1000 cryostat marketed by AFCryo and a nitrogen cryostat custom-designed by ABSOLUT SYSTEM. This equipment allows the cooling of the chamber’s radiative screens, in a closed liquid nitrogen circuit, using a recondensation loop. This avoids the use of waste nitrogen. Finally, the installation is equipped with a helium gas circulation loop, cooled between 20K (-253°C) and 40K (-233°C) by a Cryomech equipment. It allows the cooling of the cryogenic panels for the trapping of the propelled Xenon gas.

Thanks to our teams’ expertise in thermal management, we are able to provide the right power and temperature for each area of the vacuum chamber to make it efficient, robust and reliable.
