Absolut System has successfully developed and manufactured a helium loop for cryogenic cooling of a 140K laser amplifier.

The entire laser system is being developed in collaboration between the STFC (Science and Technology Facilities Council) research organization and the Hilase Centre, where the finished device will be based.

The objective was to maintain an optical laser amplifier with helium at cold temperature (140K or -133°C), without emitting impurities (particulate and molecular), while adsorbing the 4kW power output by the amplifier.

Completed in April 2022, this project has gone through a period of testing and validation:

This unique project is based on Absolut System’s expertise in cryogenics. The expertise of our engineers has enabled us to propose two innovative technologies:

A cryogenic circulator

A venturi system

  • Cryo circulateur + volute-1

Absolut System develops and optimizes high-reliability, high-performance cryogenic circulators for moving a pressurized fluid at cryogenic temperature (less than 150K) in a closed circuit, according to application requirements.

In this case, the high-purity cold helium is circulated through the optical cryostat without contamination. The presence of grease could burn and disrupt the laser amplifier, so Absolut System has developed a circulator with hydrodynamic gas bearings. The available gas flow is 200g/s at 140K.

Absolut System has unique expertise in non-contact hydrodynamic gas-bearing turbomachinery, enabling all our cryogenic systems to reduce their maintenance requirements and improve their performance.

    Cryo circulateur + volute-1
  • Installation of a venturi mixing system for compact installation. This system mixes hot and cold gas to regulate the laser amplifier at a temperature of 140K.

Cold gas is drawn in at the venturi throat. The Venturi is a physical effect of fluid dynamics: the velocity of a fluid increases and its static pressure decreases as it passes through a orifice. The pressure drop corresponds to the depression in the constriction of the tube, accelerating its flow.

The main success of this project lies in the installation of this gas circulation loop, tested and validated by STFC.

Absolut System designs, optimizes and manufactures cold finger or gas remote circulation loops (HMS) tailored to your applications.
